With 88 percent of our incoming freshmen living in campus residence halls, much of the student experience happens here.

The University offers many housing options throughout different areas of campus, including nine traditional residence halls and three apartment-style buildings. Students may request to live in a single, double, triple, or quad room, suite, or apartment. All residence halls and apartments are furnished and offer convenient meal options at 30 different restaurants, coffee shops, and convenience stores throughout campus.

Living on-campus is a great opportunity for all students. In addition to making friends, studies have shown that students who live on campus for multiple years get better grades and have higher graduation rates than students who live off-campus.

Freshman Housing Guarantee

The University of Minnesota guarantees housing to all admitted first-year freshmen who are willing to accept an assignment in any space designated, and who confirm their enrollment and submit their housing materials by the housing deadline. Students who apply for housing after May 1 are placed in housing on a space-available basis.

Living Learning Communities (LLCs)

To further enrich the on-campus living experience, we offer more than 30 Living Learning Communities (LLCs). LLCs provide an opportunity to live in a “house” type community with other students who share similar interests. One of these LLCs is the Students Crossing Borders community where international and U.S. students live in a single community and learn about new cultures. There are also LLCs for students who want to live with others pursuing the same type of degree or share the same interests. This is a great way to build community and make friends!

For students who choose to live off-campus, there are many convenient neighborhoods surrounding the University. Many options are within walking or biking distance from the campus. Students can receive free advice from the University Student Legal Service Office prior to or after signing a lease on an apartment or house.
