Name - Abhishek Vashist (AV)
Age - 21 (period!)
Major - Computer Science
Country - India
Hey guys. Myself Abhishek (you can call me AV) and I am an international undergraduate student at the Twin cities campus studying Computer Science. I originally belong from Punjab, India and came to the U as a transfer student from Michigan State University in my sophmore year (2nd year). After spending more than a year in the university transitioning between three different places in three years (India, Michigan and Minnesota), I can confidently say that U has been one of the best things that happened to me in my life (period).
My experience has been a mixed jouney of ups and downs and I am here just to make yours as smooth as possible. In my experience, witnessing the university environment for the first time creates similar goosebumps in everyone, whether the student may be domestic or international, boy or a girl etc. The only thing to understand is to keep your mind open and grounded at the same time to make your transition as smooth and fruitful as possible.

Majors: Sociology & Global Studies
Interests: Learning new languages, football and soccer, travelling the world.
Apa Khabar! எப்படி இருக்கிறீர்கள்! 你好! Hello! I am Adrian from Malaysia born and raised in the capital Kuala Lumpur. As you can see, those are just the three main ways of greeting people in Malaysia as Malaysia is a divers, multicultural country. Here is a fun fact about me, I can speak six languages (Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien and German) and this is common among Malaysians! Fun fact, I am learning my seventh soon. Well, I am currently a Senior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts and double majoring in Sociology and Global Studies as well as a minor in Management. I attended college in Malaysia to complete most of the General Education requirements before transferring to the U. The UofM has helped me to grow up and be ready for the scary world. The tonnes of experience and opportunites are there for the taking. The list of activities, clubs and societies and even the recreational activities is endless. Take myself for an example, I am a person who cannot stand doing nothing, that is why I've involved myself in many activities and programs. I am currently an International Student Ambassador, the current president of the Malaysian Students Association (PERSISMA), the program director for the 2016 annual Malaysian Night, the current president of Tau Sigma National Honor Society for Transfer Students, an undergraduate research assistant at the Minnesota Population Center and a Teaching Assistant (TA) of the Department of Sociology. I am also admitted into the University Honors Program and I have studied abroad in Berlin in Summer 2016, one of the best experience as a Gopher! All these coupled with an addiction of doing sports, especially soccer, I strive to be a rounded student and the UofM is a perfect platform for students to do that. So do reach out to me or any other amabassadors and hopefully we can give you deeper insight into the life and the opportunities at this wonderful institution! Once again, nice to meet you and I hope to see you at the U!
Hi everyone! I am currently a sohpomore in CBS studying Biochemistry and Neuroscience. I am an Indian citizen, but was born and raised in Kuwait so I am very comfortable around people from diverse backgrounds. I absolutely love the Twin Cities campus because of the amazing opportunities to learn, grow, and have fun. The people in Minnesota are so friendly and welcoming and have always made me feel at home ("Minnesota Nice" is very real!). Please feel free to get in touch with me about any questions you may have, or just to say hi. The best way to contact me is through my email: email@example.com.
Stay positive and step out of your comfort zone! I hope to see you around campus soon. Go Gophers!
Hello, my name is An Le. I am from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and I am currently a freshman studying Biochemistry in College of Biological Sciences (CBS). My transition to college away from home has been eased significantly thanks to the resources available on campus for students in general and for international students specifically. In my first semester at the U, I play intramural quidditch, join a student group called Biology Without Borders, and work as a student technician for the Academic Health Center. In my free time, I love to play sports at the Rec Center, watch free movies at Coffman Union Theatre, and hang out with my friends at some beautiful places in Minneapolis. I was worried about my journey at the U before I decided to come to Minnesota because of the size of the University and because of the weather in Minnesota. However, with rigorous academics and various opportunities outside of the classroom, I have grown a lot as a balanced student here at the University of Minnesota. Please feel free to contact me through my email if you have any questions about anything, and I would love to help you out! Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Hi All You Current and Future Gophers! Namaste, I am Avishek, and I am currently a graduate student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Minnesota. I come from India and have traveled the length and breadth of the country, but I had never been outside India. I was really apprehensive about moving to the US and beginning my life here. I have been in the US for 1 year and 3 months (to be precise) and I have enjoyed everyday that I have spent at the University. The academic culture is one of the best in the country and the University is one of the top public-funded institutions that carry out research in a wide variety of fields. I worked as a research assistant (RA) for a professor in the ECE department for a year, and now I am a teaching assistant (TA) for an undergraduate level course. I am also working for two companies on two different projects and interning at the Office for Technology Commercialization under the University. There are several opportunities here that one can take advantage of, and I am glad I am working towards that. I love biking to the University and have been on several bike trails around the University. I love reading, swimming and scuba-diving. I intend to visit all the diving sites in the world and get a professional diver's certificate. I love meeting new people and sharing each others' culture and food, and that is probably something one cannot find in any other country. People from all walks of life, different countries, different customs and traditions, all co-exist right here in the US.

Hi All! I'm Caterina and I'm from Caracas, Venezuela. I'm a Nutrition major in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS). I'm a transfer student and this is my first year at the University of Minnesota. So far my transition has been great! I love the fact that this is a very diverse university and you're always meeting new people from different cultures and different nationalities. I've been living in Minnesota for 2 years and I like it a lot. I was raised in a tropical country so the fact that we actually have in here the 4 seasons is amazing! Minnesota is a great state, everyone in here is so welcoming and nice. I would definitely recommend coming to Minnesota and choosing the U!
Languages: English, Vietnamese, and a bit of Spanish & Japanese (you can teach me!)
I'm a huge fan of: swimming, travelling, cooking, music, and learning about other cultures!
Chao everyone! My name is Chau (pronounced like "chosen" without the "en".) Currently I am a junior pursuing my BAS in Management Information Systems at Carlson. I came to the U as a transfer student after over three years studying in Seattle, Washington. So, if you have any questions about the transition to UMN, feel free to ask me! Even though this is my first semester, I'll try my best to find the answer.
As a international transfer student, I can't stress enough the importance of having these two attitudes: engaging and positive! Things are never easy at the beginning, but I always remind myself to be thankful for the supportive resources at the U. Outside classrooms, I'm an active member of the Business Association for Multicultural Students (BAM) Besides, I'm working as a IT Help Specialist for the OIT department. These experiences do not only develop my skillset, but also create a great community that makes me feel like my home (Hanoi is the first, Seattle is my second beloved one, and now Minnesota is the third one, I guess.)
I truly believe that life is all about learning. Coming to Minnesota, I've learned how to eat Midwestern's food. I've learned how to shop my grocery on the most constricted budget and the least time. I've learned to enjoy the weather even during -10C winter days. I've learned that smiling to people while crossing street actually warms up our hearts (it's science!)
And I bet you will surely do too. Be engaged and positive! And don't hesitate to seek help! :D

Hey guys! I am a freshmen year student trying to major in economics(currently undecided). I was born and raised in Deajoen, South Korea but then I decided to study abroad in the States. I graduated high school in NYC and came to Minnesota, which is the first midwestern state in my life, for college. So far, I have been trying out lots of stuffs at the U and meeting amazing people. I definitely find myself learning completely new and intersting aspects of this country, which are very different from ones in New York! Interests: Photography, music, behavioral economics, any type of food, etc
Hi guys! My name is Dara, and as I said above, I'm from Indonesia (shout out to my Indonesian fellows out there!). I'm currently a Junior studying Economics and Psychology. I came here as a freshman, and coming here as a freshman from Indonesia (which is 24 hours away by plane!) was a pretty terrifying yet fun experience. The obvious difference between Indonesia and the US is the weather. Back in Indonesia, it's pretty much summer everyday with a little bit of rain at the end of the year. On the other hand in the US, specifically in Minnesota, the weather is very cold. When I came here, I was surprised by how cold it was. Moreover, I didn't know anyone coming here! The whole cultural differences were also overwhelming. BUT, as I became more experienced and knowledgable about the U and the US culture in general, I really enjoy living here. So for those of you who's reading this, believe me; the U of M is a perfect place for you and you're going to have a great time!! Please feel free to shoot me (or other ambassadors) emails and I'll be very happy to talk to you about anything (yes, literally anything!). I will always be down to help you with any of your questions. So, do not hesitate reaching to one of us! Once again, you have to trust me that you're going to have the best time of your college year at the U of M. We are waiting for you! Cheers!

Ciao! My name is Fabio and I am a senior pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering Mechanics ( Yeah, it is basically rocket science). The transition to the U of M has been successful for me thanks mainly to the many services directed to the international students, which is why I decided to join in and do the same for the prospective U of M students! Some things about me: As I mentioned earlier, one of my main interests is soccer (actually football, but we are not going to get into this again). I love playing soccer, watching soccer and discussing soccer. I have also made a lot of friends while playing soccer too here at the U.
In my 4 years of college I have had a vast array of experiences, so feel free to ask me about getting involved in campus life, take part in research or even nailing that off-campus internship. I am happy to help other students make the most out of their college experience.
Hometown: Istanbul, Turkey

Merhaba! My name is Faruk Aydin and I am currently a freshman majoring in Mechanical Engineering. I'm from Istanbul, Turkey but I have been away from home for 'a while.' I lived in Saudi Arabia for 6 years. Before that I lived in Lebanon and United Arab Emirates (Dubai). Coming to Minnesota has been a new chapter in my life and farthest away from home. Ever since my first day in Minnesota, people have been nice and welcoming.
Last year, I was in the same boat as most of you, trying to pick the right university for me. International student ambassadors helped me learn more about the U outside of the statistics and google search. I decided to do the same this year and I would love to answer your questions, give tips and share my experiences at the U with you!

Hello Friends, I'm Jinrui(Leslie) Li, an international student from China.I'm from a city called Shenzhen. It is a coastal city(no snow in winter), locates in the Southern part of China(for those who don't know: it's right next to HongKong). So I was very excited to see snow and enjoy myself in the winter here(not like most people). My major is Nutrition so I actually spent plenty of time at St.Paul campus like most of our CFANS students. St.Paul is very peaceful and has less people. I liked it a lot as I lived in the dorm, Bailey at St. Paul campus during my freshmen year. In my spare time, I like to read, go swimming, play badmintons, watch movies, go shoping or just hangout with friends. Please don't hesitate to contact me via email: email@example.com if you have questions.

I am a transfer student and this is my second year in Minnesota. Before coming here, I studied in a very small town called Kirksville in Missouri for 2 years. Minneapolis, where the campus is located at (most of the buildings--some are located in St. Paul too!), is such a beautiful city. And by saying CITY, I mean it. There are lots of things you can do here including games, foods, concerts, shopping, and so on. The people here are very nice and friendly toward international students, so you will feel welcomed everywhere! Coming to the U was one of the best deicisions that I have ever made in my life, and I hope you do too! Hi everyone! I come from a Malaysian city called Penang (you've probably heard of it as the "food heaven"). I also call Subang Jaya my second home as I went to college there, and then transferred to the UMN! At UMN, I am a Sexual Health Awareness and Disease Education (SHADE) Coordinator at Boynton Health. Besides that, I am an International Student Ambassador, and I also join the Malaysian Student Group (PERSISMA) on campus. Minneapolis is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen - it is truly amazing here. Hey! My name is Pierre Abillama and I’m from Beirut, Lebanon. I am a sophomore at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities hoping to graduate with a degree in Computer Engineering from the College of Science and Engineering. I speak three languages including Arabic and French. I love music, enjoy playing electric guitar with my friends, and appreciate good Lebanese food (mostly hummus). I also follow some sports, but mainly soccer.
I came to the U not knowing what to expect because most international students including myself didn't get to visit and tour the beautiful campus before the start of the academic year. Looking back, I can confidently say that I am thankful to be here and to have this wonderful college experience at one of the best schools in the U.S. where I have so many opportunities to develop my technical abilities and leadership skills. Ski U-Mah!
My name's Polina, I'm an exchange student in the UofM for 2017-2018 academic year. Originally I'm from Yekaterinburg, city in Russian mountains on the border between Europe and Asia. My major is chemistry (organic one, yes, these scary benzene rings and everything else) and I'm happy with my choice.
About me? Well, I have lots of stories to tell from my life. So far I've traveled to more than 15 countries and going to keep on exploring the world. I'm passionate about music, driving and walking. I think in life it's really important to do something memorable and interesting. In your 60-s it's not gonna be fun telling your grandchildren (or cats?) about being a coach potato during your best youth years.
I enjoy going to concerts, cooking and drawing. Trying to learn the third language so far, dream about round the world trip. Studying away from all best friends and family is definitely a challenging opportunity to take in life, but challenges make life interesting, don't they?
Hello everyone! I’m Prashasti Bhatnagar, an international student from New Delhi, India. I am in the honors program, majoring in Sociology with minors in Public Health, Social Justice, and Neuroscience. Passionate about health policy and health disparities, I plan to get a JD/MPH after I graduate in Spring 2018, in order to fight for healthcare as a human right and get a chance to pursue my dream and work towards bringing about a change in health policy. In my free time, I love to sing, read and write. Even though college is overwhelming and nerve-wracking (no kidding), the innumerable opportunities provided by the U allow us to connect and be proactive both on-campus and off-campus. I am here as a resource to help and assist you with any and all of your questions and concerns, so please feel free to email me!

Hello! I'm from Karachi, Pakistan, and am currently in my second year at the Universoty of Minnesota! I'm in the college of Biological Sciences and plan to major in Genetics, Cell Biology and Development and minor in Neuroscience! So far my experience at UMN has been great! This school has so much to offer in terms of classes, clubs, social groups, sports teams, and numerous other activities, which makes it so much easier to get more involved and make friends. All you really need to do is have a psoitive attitude and a friendly face!
The Twin Cities also has so much to offer, from museums to parks. One of my favorite things to do is to find and go to cheap concerts downtown, or even just walk around the downtown area, and impulsively spend money in cute coffe shops!
If you have any questions at all, or just want to know more about life at the University of Minnesota, shoot me an email at email@example.com.

Hey everyone! My name is Sharu and I am a freshman studying Economics here a the U. I am originally from Colombo, Sri Lanka where it is warm and humid throghout the year. Moving to Minnesota was definitely one of the biggest decisions I made in my life and while there are a many things here that are different to the way of life back home, I feel like growing up watching American tv shows and movies has helped me adjust to the culture change. In my free time I like to go out with friends and explore the city. We would usually find new things to do like going go-karting, going to concerts or trying food we've never had before. Since I lived right by the beach in back Sri Lanka, going surfing and meeting new people there was definitely one of my favorite things to do. I chose the University of Minnesota because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and put myself in a place I would never have imagined myself in, and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I've made. Although I've only been here for less than a year, I've already made countless memories with the people here and I'm excited to see what's in store for me in the future. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have at email@example.com

Hi everyone! I’m Sophronia (she/her/hers), a freshman studying nutrition but thinking of switching, just like half of the UMN students lol. I’m pretty lost finding the right career path for me but there is still plenty of time.
A little more about me if you are interested… I’m a foodie so I love trying new foods and cuisine. Minneapolis is a great place to explore the different options ranging from African soul food to Hmong food to rolled ice cream. I’ve tried them all, hence my broken wallet.
Fun fact, this is my first year at the U AND in the States so it is a BIG change!! I’m still trying to settle in but so far, everyone has been super welcoming and I love it here (cue the “Minnesota nice”). I’m currently living in the dorms and am a health advocate and work as the clinic’s student employee. So if you are thinking of going into a health career or something similar or even just general questions about culture shock and being independent and popping your little security bubble, hit me up and ask me as many questions as possible at firstname.lastname@example.org!

Hi everyone! My name is Uyen Dang. I am a junior studying Management Information System (MIS) at the Carlson School of Management. I grew up in Ho Chi Minh City and came to the U.S. during my freshman year in high school. I studied at Edmonds Community College in Seattle before transferring to the U in Fall 2015. My transition to the U was not easy, but thanks to the resources available at school, I was able to overcome that hardship. Now that I am more familiar and comfortable here, I would like to extend my help to those who may need it, especially transfer students. If you are nervous about whether or not you are accepted to the U, or still deciding on what major you should pursue, or if you are worried about the cultural differences, talk to me, because I have been in your shoes in all those situations. I am here to help, so please feel free to email me with your questions or concerns!
