I want to talk to you in detail about the extracurricular and outside classroom learning opportunities available at the U!
One lifetime is not enough to figure out everything the university has to offer - you can take my word for it.
Outside classroom resources like student organizations and student clubs can help foster valuable friendships, leadership experiences and most importantly - self discovery. I want to break it down for you!
1. Things you should do before coming to university!
-> Checkout https://gopherlink.umn.edu/organizations/ . There are almost a THOUSAND clubs we currently have! There is a Quidditch Club as well - I am sure you will find a club of your interest.
I deeply encourage all of you to think about your passions and interests and how to you want to pursue them at the university. Think about what kind of impact you want to have on campus. You don't need to have all the answers figured out, but it is good to have a rough map in your head.
2. Things you should do when you are at university!
-> Use the Undergraduate Career Centre at your school. Career coaches connect you to upper classmen who have the same interests as you. I am sure that you will have a buddy program in your first semester - I highly recommend that you joint that. Career coaches are of immense help in navigating on/off campus internship opportunities.
-> Network with your faculty. The faculty at the U is known for their kindness. Take your professors out for coffee. Don't hesitate to email faculty members who are involved in work you are passionate about! They are there to help.
There are so many things you will figure out yourself as time goes by and as you talk to more people!!
There are an enormous amount of opportunities available to us. The best piece of advice I have received is to be as proactive as I can outside of classroom - I have to same piece of advice for all of you. Take as much initiative as you can!
You guys are going to have a lot of fun - I promise you!
