If going to college in America is your very first experience far away from home, you may wonder how you can succeed at one of the Big 10 universities as a student, as a future leader, and as a person. Knowing your unspoken concerns, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) at the University of Minnesota has prepared for you the series of Global Gopher Events to equip you with tools and skills to achieve whatever goals you have in mind and to make the most out of your experience studying abroad.
Global Gopher events are workshops that cover a wide range of crucial topics for international students: how to make American friends, how to prepare for winter in Minnesota, how to get a trustworthy overview of American Health Care System, et cetera. By attending this event series and getting involved in its activities, you will have many opportunities to learn about different resources on campus, to navigate around the U, to know how to stay in shape, to make new international friends, and to hear advice from upper-class students to succeed academically and socially before your first semester in college even starts!
As a freshman, I did attend the Global Gopher Events in August 2016. Thanks to this experience, I learned about the Writing Center where I can have all my academic papers revised. Furthermore, I also met two Vietnamese sophomores who have given me advice on classes, housing, and solutions to homesickness. This has also help me in balancing academics and fun. Because of this, I feel like home at the U.
If the Global Gopher Events sounds interesting to you, you should plan to arrive on campus at least two weeks before your first semester starts. ISSS, all the Ambassadors, and I myself are ready to give you a grand and welcoming beginning of your journey here- at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities!
