Hey guys! Today I would like to introduce the Buddy & Mentor Program hosted by International Buddy Program (IBP) where I am working as an Event Coordinator. If you are a new student coming to the U, apply for a buddy and get advice from your mentor while making new friends!
The goal of International Buddy Program (IBP) is to help new international students have a smooth transition to the University of Minnesota. We pair up a mentor, a current U of M student, with 2 new international students depending on their preference that they indicate on the application. As a buddy, you will be able to get help and advice from your mentor if you have any difficulties adjusting to the college life in Minnesota.
I used to be a buddy myself when I moved from California to Minnesota last fall. I needed someone (other than advisors at school) who could answer my questions about the U of M life, economics major, student organizations, and other resources available on campus. I also wanted to meet new people from different countries and learn about their culture. So I applied to be a buddy, and got paired up with another international student from Thailand who also majored in Economics. Since she has been a student at the U of M at least a year ahead of me, and has taken more major classes than I had, I was able to ask her for advice about academics and the U of M life in general.
Other than the Buddy & Mentor program, IBP is planning to host a variety of social events for international students next year. It’s a perfect opportunity for you to meet other students from different cultures and mingle with them!

We board members try our best to match a perfect mentor for each and every one of you who applies to be a buddy, so if you want to have a wonderful college experience with many different people, interesting culture and fun events, don't hesitant to apply to be an IBP buddy!
