The University of Minnesota is highly ranked in many areas by prestigious institutions and organizations. Here are some of our recent institution rankings:

  • 9th among major U.S. research institutions and 26th in the world by Newsweek magazine
  • 9th among U.S. public research universities and 28th in the world out of 500 universities worldwide by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (2011)
  • 3rd Best Value U.S. College for International Students by USA Today and a “Best Value in Public Colleges” by Princeton Review, Kiplinger’s, and Forbes
  • 4th for patent creation by The Scientist Magazine, recognizing the University of Minnesota as a home to inventions and research breakthroughs
  • 8th among U.S. public research universities and 10th among all U.S. universities in the 2009 National Science Foundation Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges
  • 15th best public college in the U.S. by Business First
  • 16th most-awarded faculty among public universities and 29th most-awarded among all U.S. universities (Top American Research Universities, 2010)
  • 29th best global university by U.S. News and World Report
  • 57th best U.S. college for international students by USA Today
  • More than 60% of our doctoral programs rank in the top 25% nationally, across a wide range of programs in agriculture, engineering, humanities, sciences and social sciences (National Research Council) 
  • First recipient of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU)'s Institutional Award for Global Learning, Research, and Engagement — an award recognizing "institutions at the leading edge of inclusive and comprehensive efforts to internationalize their campuses"
