Tips on How to Travel on a Budget

Spring break is coming, and one of the best ways to spend it is to travel! I know, as a college student, we have to be smart on how we spend our money. But that doesn't mean that you can't go travelling over the spring break. Now I'm going to give you some tips on how to travel on a budget, based on my experience.

1. Plan ahead! Be specific on how you plan your trip. Make some type of "rundown" of your trip, along with the estimated cost you're going to spend on each day. Keep in mind that it's okay to change your notes, as long as you keep it updated. Also, if you are thinking of going by plane, bus, train and what not, book the tickets ahead of time! Trust me, the price rises everyday. Do not postpone!

2. Pack efficiently. Especially when you fly, just bring your small cabin lugage. You don't want to bring your big lugage, because not only will it hassle you, you most likely will have to pay around $25 to check in your lugage. If you are travelling to different places, you don't want to pay an extra $25 for each flight, right?

3. Consider hostels. If you are the type of person who doesn't mind staying with other travellers, this might be a good choice. By staying in a hostel, you will save a lot of money which you can spend on other things, and also it's pretty cool because you can make new friends from all around the world. However, don't get easily tempted by the low price that they offer, do some research first. In my experience, I've stayed in a very sketchy hostel, and I ended up checking out immediately. I'm not saying that all hostels are bad, in fact I've stayed in a very decent yet affordable hostel too. But you just gotta be very picky about them.

4. Make the most of public transportation! If you are new to the place, download google maps. Seriously, google maps is a life savior. If you are not familiar with google maps, learn how to use it before your trip. Google maps provides information about buses, trains, and more. Taking public transportations will save you a lot of money. If you are in a hurry though, don't take taxi, just order uber or lyft. They are way cheaper.

5. Use Yelp. Yelp had helped me a lot when it comes to searching for places to eat. Not only that, you can also search for other things on Yelp, which can help you plan your trip.

6. It's okay to treat yourself! Hey, travelling is about having fun and experiences, right? When I travelled, I didn't always spend my money on expensive food, but I tried to at least go to one fancy restaurant that's recommended in the city, and that's totally fine.

I hope that helps! Here some pictures of me when I went travelling last summer for 2 weeks. (I went to New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and San Francisco).
