How to keep yourself sane!

As a student, sometimes the expectations are great on you. Being at a top institution such as the University of Minnesota requires a lot of work, and there is a lot of effort and grit involved. Sometimes, it can lead to getting stressed, you can start to procrastinate on school work, or just become overwhelmed academically and socially. So, how best to deal with such a scenario? Well I am going to share with you how you can, with a little effort, get back on top of your game.

One of the most important things that help me with keeping on top of my affairs is scheduling using a calendar. Using a physical calendar to mark your commitments, and see when you are free, can help you plan ahead and stay clear of congested schedules. Usually people get overwhelmed when they are in a rut and can not get back up because of piling commitments, but if you use a calendar the right way, it can relieve a lot of that stress.

What else can you do? It might seem counter-intuitive, but maybe sometimes the best course of action is to let your hair down once in a while! Have fun, join a student group, socialize with friends! Maybe see that movie they are showing at Coffman Memorial Union this weekend for U of M students for free! Set aside a certain number of hours (not too much) each week so that you reward yourself, so that you do not get bogged down mentally. It has a rejuvenating effect on the mind and can help you well and truly deal with all that stress!

Sometimes, it helps to go talk to someone who understands you and can help you through it. The Boynton Health Services offers help to students with regards to academic difficulty, managing procrastination, and dealing with stress. They even have a program called Pet Away Worry and Stress, or PAWS for short, where you can recharge yourself by petting cute animals!

 

Sometimes you can be stressed just because of the distractions at home, or not studying enough or attentively. Have no fear, for the U of M libraries are here! When you feel like you can not study due to distractions, libraries are always good. They are chock full of learning resources, you can get access to books and internet databases, as well as printers and scanners and computers! Often times, it is easier to study, as well as having many tutors there to help you study specific things if you need help. This causes a source of great many stresses to go away!

College can get hard sometimes. But for those times, you have resources. And it is up to you to use those resources to have a fulfilling campus experience! Remember, the best thing about college is the experience, and you do not want to ruin it by not being able to manage stress! It helps learning and growth and enjoyment!
